Our Future Health is building one of the world’s most significant health research resources. We want researchers to be able to use that data to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of disease.

Today, researchers can spend significant time preparing, mapping and harmonising data before they can begin their analysis. We’re creating a new Data Harmonisation squad to address more of that work once, at source: turning trusted data into reusable, interoperable products that are easier to analyse and combine.

We’re looking for a Senior Product Manager to establish this capability from the ground up. You’ll work directly with researchers to identify where harmonisation will make the greatest difference, set the squad’s strategy and lead the development of reusable products and capabilities.

The initial focus includes transforming priority NHS datasets into the OMOP Common Data Model. The longer-term opportunity is broader: to shape how we approach data models, semantics and interoperability, and build data foundations that are ready to support advanced analytics and AI-enabled research.

This is a genuine 0–1 role, with the opportunity to create something that can scale. You’ll need to make clear choices in a complex and evolving area: deciding where common models and standards will help researchers, where a reusable capability can serve multiple needs, and where standardisation would add little value.

What you'll do

You’ll own the outcomes, strategy and roadmap for Data Harmonisation. Working with researchers, data specialists and colleagues across Product and Science, you’ll turn broad ambitions into clear product choices and measurable improvements.

You’ll lead the squad in developing derived data products from trusted source data created by our existing Data Product squads. You’ll also define the reusable capabilities behind those products, including data transformation, ontologies, metadata, provenance and versioning.

A core part of the role will be making data more AI-ready. That means building products around consistent structures, clear semantic definitions, machine readability and traceability, so researchers, software and AI-enabled tools can work with the data more reliably and at greater scale.

You’ll work closely with the Head of Data & Proposition and partner with Product Managers, Engineering, Data Engineering, Data Science, Science and other specialists. You’ll bring people together around a clear direction, explain technical trade-offs in accessible terms and keep investment focused on meaningful researcher needs.

  • Set the strategy, roadmap and measures of success for the new Data Harmonisation capability.
  • Work directly with external researchers and internal experts to understand where data preparation and interoperability create barriers to research.
  • Prioritise datasets, use cases and standards according to researcher value and strategic impact.
  • Lead the squad’s initial work with OMOP, while building capabilities that can support other models and standards where there is a clear need.
  • Develop reusable derived data products from trusted source data, with clear boundaries between source products and harmonised products.
  • Shape reusable approaches to transformation, ontologies, semantics, metadata, provenance and versioning.
  • Make AI readiness a core product outcome by ensuring data is consistently structured, clearly defined, machine-readable and traceable.
  • Design for reuse across Data Access and the Clinical Research Recruitment Service when the same underlying need exists.
  • Establish measures that show whether researchers spend less time preparing data and can reach meaningful analysis sooner.
  • Work with Engineering and data specialists to make sound product decisions in a technically complex area.
  • Make and communicate clear prioritisation decisions, including the evidence, assumptions and trade-offs behind them.
  • Champion user-centred, evidence-based product development and contribute to the wider Product community.

Requirements

  • Experience as a Senior Product Manager, with ownership of complex product outcomes and strategy.
  • Experience building a product, platform or capability from the ground up, or significantly reshaping one so it can scale.
  • Strong discovery skills and experience working directly with specialist users to understand their needs and identify the right problems to solve.
  • The product judgement to choose where to invest, make clear trade-offs and decide what not to build.
  • Experience translating broad strategic goals into a clear product direction, priorities and measurable outcomes.
  • Experience working with complex data products, platforms or data-intensive services.
  • Enough technical understanding to work effectively with engineering and data specialists on data models, semantics, metadata and interoperability.
  • An understanding of how well-structured, machine-readable and clearly described data supports advanced analytics and AI-enabled products.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams in complex or matrix environments.
  • Strong critical thinking and prioritisation skills, including the ability to work through technical ambiguity and incomplete evidence.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to make complex technical choices understandable to different audiences.
  • Comfort working in a product area where the strategy, technology and customer needs are still evolving.

It would also be helpful if you have

  • Experience with health, clinical, scientific or research data.
  • Experience with Common Data Models, ontologies, terminology systems or interoperability standards.
  • Familiarity with OMOP or comparable healthcare data standards, such as i2b2, CDISC or FHIR.
  • Experience building data products or platforms for AI, machine learning or advanced analytics.
  • Experience with data lineage, provenance, versioning or reproducibility.
  • Experience in a regulated environment where research utility, governance, security and trust need to be balanced.

Closing date for applications: 9am, Friday 6th November.

Benefits

  • Salary from £76,000.
  • Generous Pension Scheme – We invest in your future with employer contributions of up to 12%.
