We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to join a fast-growing technology environment focused on building reliable, scalable, and high-performance digital products. The role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working in a 0-to-1 product environment , solving complex backend challenges, and building systems that can support rapid business growth.

You will play an important role in developing the backend foundation for a technology-driven consumer platform, with opportunities to work on modern AI-powered search and discovery experiences . The role requires strong engineering fundamentals, ownership, and the ability to translate product requirements into robust technical solutions.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend applications and services.
• Build reliable, secure, and high-performance RESTful APIs and backend components.
• Develop backend capabilities supporting AI-powered search, discovery, and personalised user experiences .
• Translate product and business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Design efficient service architectures, data models, and backend workflows.
• Integrate backend services with databases, internal systems, external APIs, and third-party platforms.
• Optimise backend systems for performance, scalability, reliability, and availability.
• Implement effective logging, monitoring, error handling, and operational practices.
• Write clean, reusable, testable, and maintainable code following modern engineering standards.
• Participate in technical design discussions, architecture reviews, and peer code reviews.
• Develop unit and integration tests to ensure application quality and reliability.
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable fixes.
• Collaborate with AI/ML, Data, Product, Frontend, QA, and DevOps teams to deliver features end-to-end.
• Support deployments, production releases, monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Identify opportunities to improve system architecture, engineering processes, and development efficiency.
• Stay current with modern backend technologies, distributed systems, search technologies, and AI-enabled engineering practices.

What Makes You a Great Fit

• 4+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering.
• Strong hands-on experience building scalable backend services and production-grade APIs.
• Strong understanding of backend architecture, REST APIs, databases, and distributed systems .
• Experience developing reliable systems with a focus on performance, scalability, and maintainability.
• Exposure to AI search, search technologies, information retrieval, or AI-powered product experiences is highly desirable.
• Strong programming fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and design principles.
• Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and performance-optimisation skills.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD, monitoring, and modern deployment practices.
• Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows.
• Strong understanding of software testing and application development lifecycle practices.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced 0-to-1 product environment .
• Strong ownership mindset with the ability to independently drive technical initiatives from development through production.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
