Part-time | 0.6 FTE Fixed-term opportunities | Up to 6 months Community Health Nurse (ZJ1) Richmond, VIC

About the role

North Richmond Community Health is looking for experienced Registered Nurses to join our Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) team on a fixed-term, part-time basis.

We are recruiting for potentially two 0.6 FTE fixed-term positions to provide nursing coverage while members of the team are on planned leave.

As an MSIR Registered Nurse, you will provide safe, respectful and non-judgemental clinical care to people who inject drugs.

You will supervise and support clients before, during and after episodes of injecting, monitor their health and wellbeing, respond to medical emergencies, provide harm reduction education, and connect clients with other health and support services where needed.

This role suits a nurse who is clinically confident, calm in complex situations, comfortable working with people experiencing significant health and social inequity, and genuinely committed to harm reduction.

You will work closely with Registered Nurses, Harm Reduction Practitioners and the broader MSIR team, with guidance and support from the Nurse in Charge and MSIR leadership team.

In this role, you will:

• Monitor clients’ health and wellbeing throughout their visit to the MSIR and respond to changes in presentation.
• Respond to medical emergencies, including overdose and decreased conscious state, and escalate appropriately to the Nurse in Charge.
• Provide harm reduction education, including safer injecting practices, vein care and health promotion information.
• Engage with clients to identify health needs and connect them with appropriate health, welfare and support services.
• Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to plan, implement and evaluate client care.
• Maintain accurate and objective clinical documentation, including client observations and interactions.
• Provide respectful, non-judgemental care that upholds the dignity of people who use the service.

About you

You are a Registered Nurse who can combine strong clinical judgement with respectful and thoughtful client engagement.

You understand that health is shaped by social and structural factors, and you are comfortable working with people who may experience homelessness, substance dependence, stigma, trauma, mental health concerns or barriers to accessing healthcare.

You will bring:

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA.
• At least two years of post-graduate nursing experience.
• Current CPR Certificate with Oxygen Administration.
• Current First Aid Certificate.
• Strong clinical assessment and emergency response skills.
• Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment.
• Computer literacy, including experience using clinical databases.
• An understanding of, and commitment to, harm reduction and social justice.
• An understanding of the health, social and legal issues associated with injecting drug use and marginalised populations.

Experience in psychosocial and drug use assessment, referral, supportive counselling or crisis management will be highly regarded.

Experience working with people who inject drugs and providing nursing interventions within this area is also desirable.
