Technical UI Designer (Game Industry)
We are looking for a Technical UI Designer to work closely with UX Designers, UI Artists, and UI Engineers to implement UI systems and features for our AAA development partner.
This role sits between design and engineering. You will take UI and UX concepts and help turn them into scalable, responsive, performant systems in Unreal Engine. You should understand how UI data and presentation are separated, be comfortable working with MVVM and ViewModels, and have enough C++ knowledge to understand the systems you are working with and communicate effectively with engineers.
This is not a UI Engineer position, and deep C++ programming expertise is not required. However, candidates must understand C++ data types and technical programming concepts well enough to work effectively within an engineering-driven UI architecture.
In this role, you will
- Break features and wireframes into clear, scoped implementation tasks, identifying unknowns and dependencies early.
- Build and maintain UI in Unreal Engine using UMG and Widget Blueprints.
- Create appropriate UI logic using Blueprint scripting.
- Architect reusable component systems that remain flexible as designs and requirements evolve.
- Implement data-driven UI using ViewModels, view bindings, and MVVM principles in collaboration with UI Engineering.
- Work within established C++-driven UI systems and understand how data moves between game systems and presentation.
- Build UI that accounts for different screen sizes, safe areas, localization, accessibility, responsive scaling, and dynamic content.
- Design strong controller-first navigation while supporting multiple input methods and platforms.
- Profile UI performance and understand the runtime and memory costs associated with UMG, Slate, C++, textures, and other UI systems.
- Diagnose and investigate UI hitches and work with Engineering when deeper technical investigation is required.
- Collaborate closely with UX, UI Art, Engineering, and Production throughout feature development.
- Improve workflows, pipelines, documentation, and implementation practices as the team and UI systems evolve.
Above all, you advocate for the player experience while understanding the technical constraints required to deliver it.
Requirements
What we're looking for
- Professional experience implementing UI in Unreal Engine and UMG.
- A strong understanding of MVVM, ViewModels, data binding, and the separation of data from presentation , or closely comparable architectural patterns.
- Working knowledge of C++ fundamentals and data types sufficient to understand and collaborate within C++-based UI systems.
- Strong technical UI implementation skills and an understanding of UI architecture and component-based design.
- Strong knowledge of UI and UX fundamentals, including layout, composition, hierarchy, interaction patterns, responsive behavior, and state management.
- The ability to anticipate edge cases including localization, text overflow, dynamic content, scaling, changing data, and different input methods.
- Experience designing UI for controller navigation as well as other input methods.
- Experience considering performance and runtime cost during UI implementation.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills and experience working closely with Design, Art, Engineering, and Production.
- Professional Unreal Engine experience. We are not looking for candidates who would need to learn Unreal Engine on the job.
Experience shipping UI on PC is highly relevant , and experience across console and/or mobile platforms is valuable. Mobile experience is particularly useful because of the additional considerations around touch input, responsive layouts, performance, and platform-specific behavior.
Preferred
- Experience using Unreal Insights.
- Experience shipping UI on multiple platforms.
- Experience with UI materials, animation, and motion.
- Experience with Figma or similar prototyping tools.
Figma experience is useful but is not a substitute for Unreal implementation experience in this role.
