ABOUT THE ROLE

MUBI's web platform is where millions of people discover, read about and watch films. It's a streaming player, a curated catalogue and an editorial publication in one, and it has to feel fast and considered in every one of the countries we operate in.

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join our Frontend team. In this role, you will contribute to the architecture and implementation of MUBI’s website, serving millions of cinema enthusiasts across the globe. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role reporting to our Head of Frontend.

You will partner closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, video CDN engineers, and backend teams to craft high-performance, seamless digital experiences - from our curated discovery channels to streaming platform capabilities and original editorial publications.

We work hybrid-remote where we require 3 in-office days if you're near one of our sites. Our core days are Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, with the flexibility to use our offices on the remaining two days if you wish.

WHERE YOU’LL HAVE IMPACT:

• Build the web experience. Design and implement features across the platform, from discovery and catalogue to the player and our editorial pages, in React, TypeScript and Next.js. You'll own them end to end: technical scoping, implementation, automated testing (unit, integration, E2E), deployment and observability.
• Make playback feel effortless. Work directly on media player integrations, adaptive streaming experiences, dynamic video previews, and high-framerate media components.
• Keep it fast. Analyze and continuously optimize client-side bundle size, Core Web Vitals, server-side rendering performance, and edge caching strategies.
• Raise the bar. Set the standard for code quality, testing and review on the team, and help other engineers get there.
• Use AI where it pays off. Experiment with coding agents, share the prompts and skills that work, and push for measurable gains over novelty.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

• 8+ Years of Frontend Experience. Proven track record building and operating complex, consumer-facing web applications at scale using React, Next.js/SSR, and TypeScript.
• Expert knowledge of the DOM, browser rendering optimization, web performance profiling tools, state management strategies, and HTTP/media protocol fundamentals.
• Understanding of how the media is delivered to and played in modern web browsers. Familiarity with the features and problems of technologies like HLS, DASH, Widevine, FairPlay, CORS.
• Championing AI adoption across the team - experimenting with coding agents, sharing reusable prompts/skills, and pushing for measurable gains rather than novelty.
• Committed to maintainable code, test-driven development (Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress/Playwright), and strong CI/CD practices.
• Clear and articulate technical communication in an agile, cross-functional engineering organization. We use Slack & Linear.
• An independent mindset and genuine curiosity about how the product is used - you generate your own questions rather than waiting for a brief.

NICE TO HAVE:

• Experience in a fast-paced, high-growth environment (e.g. startup or scale-up).
• Experience leading or contributing to cross-functional projects with teams such as Product, Marketing, Finance, or Engineering.
• Experience with design systems and close collaboration with designers.
• Genuine interest in film and in MUBI's mission.
