Reports To: Transformer Repair Lead / Customer Service Warranty/Repair Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Compensation: $23 - $27 per hour

Shift: 1st - Monday - Thursday 6:30 am - 5:00 pm

Please Note: Due to current production demands, this position currently requires mandatory overtime, including Friday and Saturday shifts. This schedule is expected to continue through the end of the year but is subject to change based on business needs.

Position Summary: The Transformer Repair Technician troubleshoots, repairs, and retests overhead distribution transformers that are rejected during production, fail final test, or are returned by customers. Working on the production floor under the direction of the Repair Lead, this position disassembles and rebuilds units, replaces defective components, verifies repairs through electrical testing, and documents all work so units are released safely, on time, and in accordance with quality standards. The Repair Technician also helps identify recurring defects and shares findings with Production, Quality, and Engineering to prevent repeat issues.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair nonconforming and returned units, including Orange Tag, Yellow Tag production rejects, Purple Tag post-production rejects, customer return/warranty units, following the priorities set by the Repair Lead.
  • Inspect units to identify the cause of failure, including electrical faults, insulation damage, oil leaks, and mechanical or cosmetic defects.
  • Disassemble and rebuild units as needed, including draining and handling insulating oil, untanking and re-tanking core and coil assemblies, and resealing covers and gaskets.
  • Remove and replace components such as bushings, tap changers, leads, connectors, arresters, fuses, and gaskets, using brazing, crimping, and hand and power tools per work instructions.
  • Perform required electrical testing to verify repairs, including ratio (TTR), polarity, winding resistance, and insulation resistance (Megger), and coordinate final testing with the Test department prior to release.
  • Perform leak checks, refill units with oil to the correct level, and complete paint touch-up and final cosmetic inspection.
  • Read and interpret work instructions, drawings, nameplates, wiring diagrams, and specifications to complete repairs accurately.
  • Document repair findings, actions taken, and test results in the appropriate tracking system, and accurately update unit tags and status.
  • Communicate recurring defects and root-cause observations to the Quality Supervisor or Manager.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, hoists, forklifts, and other material handling equipment to move units and components.
  • Follow all company safety requirements, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical test-area safety, PPE, oil spill and environmental procedures.
  • Maintain tools, test equipment, and work areas in clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts to reduce rework, improve turnaround time, and control costs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support department and company objectives.

Requirements

Experience / Qualifications

  • 1 + Year previous experience in manufacturing, machine operation, mechanical repair, industrial maintenance, electrical work, or a related hands-on technical environment preferred.
  • Transformer manufacturing experience, including coil winding, coil leafing, transformer assembly, testing, or repair, strongly preferred.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and/or electrical issues and identifying potential causes of equipment or component failure preferred.
  • Experience using hand and power tools for disassembly, repair, component replacement, and reassembly.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions, drawings, wiring diagrams, specifications, and other technical documentation.
  • Electrical testing experience, including use of meters or transformer testing equipment, is a plus.
  • Brazing, crimping, or electrical connection experience is a plus.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes, hoists, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment is a plus.
  • Experience working within established safety procedures, including LOTO and electrical safety practices, preferred.
  • Ability to accurately document repair findings, completed work, and test results.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting ability, and attention to detail.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Frequently required to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb, reach, grasp, and use hands to handle tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Manual dexterity necessary to safely operate tools and perform transformer repair activities.
  • Visual ability including close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception necessary to inspect, troubleshoot, and repair transformer components.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a manufacturing environment.
  • Regular exposure to loud noise, temperature variations, moving equipment, overhead lifts, and other conditions typical of an industrial facility.
  • Regular contact with insulating oil, paint, and other materials handled per safety and environmental procedures.
  • Work may be performed near energized test equipment; required to follow all electrical safety and test-area procedures.
  • Required to follow all established safety procedures and identify or report potential workplace hazards.
  • Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety-toe footwear as applicable.
