ROLE PURPOSE
The Senior Analyst, Underwriting Quality Control (QC) will establish and continually improve a consistent, risk-based quality control framework for work completed by Underwriters. The role will build on existing QC practices and tools, tailoring them to the Underwriting lifecycle, products, risk decisions and operating model.
The role provides an objective, evidence-led check that underwriting assessments and outcomes are complete, consistent, appropriately documented and aligned with internal policy, procedures and applicable requirements. It will turn review results into clear management information, actionable feedback, targeted training and measurable improvements in underwriting quality.
This is a hands-on role. The Senior Analyst will conduct QC reviews, maintain the framework and reporting, follow findings through to verified remediation, and work with Underwriters and leaders to address recurring gaps. The role reports to the Director of Underwriting and influences quality across the function without replacing the Underwriter’s decision-making accountability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
BUILD AND OWN THE QC FRAMEWORK
- Assess existing QC materials, controls, data and workflows; identify what should be retained, improved or introduced for Underwriting.
- Design, document and implement an Underwriting-specific QC framework, including scope, risk-based sampling, review cadence, test scripts, scoring and severity definitions, evidence standards, escalation routes, dispute handling, calibration and remediation expectations.
- Tailor testing to the relevant underwriting stages, products, merchant and business models, risk tiers and applicable regional requirements.
- Define practical service levels and ownership for review, feedback, acknowledgement, remediation, re-review and closure, agreeing these with Underwriting leadership.
- Establish appropriate governance and records so that QC decisions and remediation are traceable and ready for internal or external review.
PERFORM AND CALIBRATE QC REVIEWS
- Review completed underwriting cases and test whether the case record is complete, and appropriately documented. Depending on case scope, this may include business model products, services and geographies; ownership, control and beneficial ownership; company and identity evidence; KYC/KYB and screening outcomes; licences and regulatory status; financial and operational evidence and accurate system records.
- Identify missing, inconsistent, stale or insufficient evidence, and opportunities to improve decision quality.
DRIVE REMEDIATION AND CONSTRUCTIVE CHALLENGE
- Communicate findings promptly, clearly and fairly to the relevant Underwriter and manager, with evidence and an actionable explanation of what needs to change.
- Track acknowledgement, corrective action and deadlines; proactively chase overdue responses and escalate unresolved or repeat issues.
- Work with Underwriters and leaders to understand root causes and ensure remediation addresses the underlying issue, not only the individual case.
REPORTING, INSIGHT AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
- Produce regular, accurate QC reporting for Underwriting leadership, with clear commentary on coverage, pass and defect rates, severity, recurring themes, remediation status, turnaround and trends by relevant team, workflow, product or risk segment.
- Support internal audit, Compliance, Risk and other assurance requests by providing accurate QC records and explaining methodology and outcomes.
BUILD UNDERWRITING CAPABILITY
- Identify capability gaps from QC findings and partner with Underwriting leaders and relevant subject-matter experts to design and deliver focused training, coaching and practical guidance.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
The ideal candidate is a rigorous and constructive quality professional who can build a practical control framework, apply it consistently and influence experienced Underwriters. They combine sound KYC/KYB judgement with strong analytical and reporting skills, confidence in following through on remediation, and the ability to turn case-level observations into improvements across a regional operation.
ESSENTIAL
- Significant experience in underwriting, merchant due diligence, AML/KYC/KYB, onboarding, financial crime operations, quality control, quality assurance or a related risk function within financial services, payments or fintech.
- Practical understanding of UK and EEA due diligence requirements, with familiarity across the US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE, Australia and New Zealand; ability to recognise jurisdictional differences and escalate interpretation questions appropriately.
- Demonstrated ability to design, implement or materially improve a QC, QA, control testing or file review framework.
- Strong reporting and data skills, including spreadsheets, pivot tables and clear management reporting; experience with Looker dashboard or business intelligence tools is an advantage. Use of AI is a plus.
- Effective stakeholder management and influencing skills, including the persistence to chase remediation and escalate overdue or repeat issues appropriately.
- Experience delivering training or coaching based on quality control findings.
NICE TO HAVE
- Direct exposure to underwriting or due diligence in a merchant acquiring setting.
- Familiarity with case management and CRM tools, dashboard platforms.
- A relevant degree or equivalent practical experience; recognised AML, financial crime or compliance qualifications (for example ACAMS or ICA) are beneficial but not mandatory.
