AS400 Computer Operator

Operators keep client production environments running. The role covers system backups, report distribution, and continuous monitoring of system and application jobs, with escalation to the designated programming team members when a production job errors. Operators may also monitor communications equipment and perform limited troubleshooting and problem resolution, serving as first-line support for operational and security issues across the environments CapNexus manages. This is a full-time, fully remote, overnight (3rd shift) position on a fixed 4-day, 10-hour schedule (Wednesday–Saturday, Eastern Time) .

SCHEDULE — FIXED, EASTERN TIME

  • Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 8:00 PM – 6:00 AM ET
  • Saturday: 6:00 PM – 4:00 AM ET
  • 4 × 10-hour shifts = 40 hours/week. The schedule is fixed; additional 3rd-shift nights may be offered to cover team vacations/PTO.
  • Nights, weekends, and holidays are part of the regular schedule.

PAY BENEFITS

  • $20-30/hour, full-time with benefits.
  • Overtime: hours over 40 per week are paid at time and a half.
  • Holiday pay: 8 hours of holiday pay provided by the business, plus pay for all hours worked.

WORK SETUP TEAM

  • 100% remote — work from home.
  • Equipment provided: laptop(s), monitors, stands, and a small UPS to hold power through brief outages.
  • Candidate provides: a phone and reliable high-speed home internet (internet and hotspot are not provided).
  • Team: 6-person operations team; reports to the Operations Manager.
  • Works independently: one operator per shift (two operators on Saturdays, 8:00 PM – 4:00 AM). Client escalation contacts and an on-call operations staff member are available for support.
  • Perform routine maintenance on system hardware and its peripherals.
  • Monitor the operation of core systems and auxiliary equipment throughout the shift.
  • Own all production job scheduling requests for the assigned shift.
  • Contribute to the review of operating standards alongside the supervisor.
  • Execute tape library, problem management, help desk, and documentation functions.
  • Identify and document job scheduling and processing problems arising from software or hardware malfunctions.
  • Report all incidents and supporting detail to clients and management.
  • Ensure every processing requirement is met on a timely basis.
  • Follow defined escalation procedures when issues and errors arise.
  • Process security requests as appropriate, based on the client statement of work (SOW).

REQUIRED

  • 3–5 years of hands-on IBM i (AS/400) operations experience. Additional training provided.
  • Hands-on experience in an operations environment.
  • Understanding of operating system principles, concepts, practices, and standards.
  • Ability to identify problems, collect data, and resolve routine problems of limited scope and complexity within established policies and procedures.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, activities, and tasks simultaneously.
  • Facilitation and change management skills.
  • Able to work a fixed overnight schedule, including weekends and holidays, and open to picking up additional 3rd-shift coverage when needed.
  • Comfortable working independently as the sole operator on shift.
  • Phone and reliable high-speed home internet.

PREFERRED

  • Experience with third-party scheduling software such as Fortra ROBOT.
  • Experience with IBM HMC (Hardware Management Console).
  • Experience in retail systems operations and store polling.
  • Understanding of IBM Power Systems, with the ability to troubleshoot hardware problems.
  • Experience managing and logging tape libraries.
  • Experience with Island Pacific and JDA MMS.
