The Ammortal Chamber integrates five science-backed modalities into one immersive 25-minute session. Our clients include wellness clinics and spas, sports teams and athletic departments, hotels, and individuals who bring the Chamber into their homes.

We are a small team with a startup culture. Hardware and software engineers, health professionals, and operators work side by side. Since shipping our first product we have grown steadily, and the software that drives the Chamber is now at the center of what comes next.

This role offers hands-on ownership, room to grow into technical leadership, and a direct hand in shaping how the Chamber works for the people who use it.

What is this role and why does it exist?

This role centers on Linux systems software for the Chamber: building and owning the application-level software that runs on embedded Linux and interfaces with hardware over common serial and bus protocols — the software layer that sits above the firmware and drives the product. You'll occasionally reach up the stack into frontend work as well, giving you end-to-end understanding of the system.

At the senior level, you are a technical owner in this layer. You help make the architectural calls, set the standard for code quality and testing, and serve as a go-to person when a hardware-software problem needs solving. You'll work closely with the hardware team, OT partners, and the rest of the software team, and you'll help level up teammates who are earlier in their careers.

Responsibilities

• Own the design and development of Chamber application software on embedded Linux, including hardware communication over serial and bus protocols
• Lead architectural decisions for our microservices-based platform and drive them through to implementation
• Define and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, and deployment
• Act as the technical escalation point for complex customer and field issues
• Maintain and occasionally extend early-gen Chamber software
• Contribute to frontend work as needed to ship complete features
• Collaborate with hardware, operations, and customer experience teammates to deliver end-to-end solutions

Requirements

What technical knowledge do you need to perform in your role?

Required

• Strong proficiency in Go, C, or C++, and at least one high-level language (Python, JavaScript, or similar)
• Hands-on experience interfacing software with hardware over serial or bus protocols (for example Modbus, I2C, SPI, RS-485, or similar)
• Deep familiarity with Linux environments, the command line, and system-level debugging
• Experience designing and shipping production software in a microservice or distributed architecture
• Experience with Git and modern CI/CD practices
• Understanding of software development lifecycle and testing practices

Preferred

• Experience with MQTT or other IoT communication protocols
• Experience with Docker and containerized deployments on embedded or edge hardware
• Familiarity with Debian-based Linux systems
• Experience with Next.js, React, and TypeScript
• Familiarity with shell scripting (Bash)
• Familiarity with a project tracking tool (Asana, Linear, Jira, or similar)
• Familiarity with AI-collaboration tools and agents

Qualifications

Must haves

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with meaningful time spent on Linux-based systems

Nice to haves

• Previous experience in an embedded Linux, IoT, robotics, industrial automation, or connected hardware role
• Previous experience with real-time or safety-conscious systems
• Contributions to open-source or personal projects demonstrating depth in systems software

• Pay range: $125,000 - $160,000
• Benefits: 80% health, dental, and vision covered.
• Flexible paid time off.
• Location: Hybrid in the Asheville, NC area. Onsite at least 2 days per week, can be more some weeks depending on current assignments.
